Letter from Mayor Dyer to Community Leaders.

downloadDear Community Leader,
Together with our regional leaders, we have worked relentlessly to advance the vision for SunRail as it is a critical step in the effort to give our residents desperately-needed alternatives to their automobiles. On April 30, our community will join together to celebrate the beginning of operations on the first phase of SunRail which is 32 miles long, includes 12 stations and connects DeBary on the north to Sand Lake Road on the south.
Today, the Federal Transit Administration (FTA) showed its full support for SunRail by committing $63 million toward the second phase of the project. FTA’s funding commitment allows our community to move forward with construction on phase two using SunRail to connect four counties.
FTA’s support for SunRail helps our region fulfill a decade-long vision to better connect Central Florida using passenger rail and other alternate modes of transportation.
SunRail is the spine of what will eventually be a region-wide, multi-modal network of transportation options that allow us to get where we want to go without having to rely solely on car ownership and expensive gasoline. SunRail also encourages smart growth and transit-oriented-development with new projects at each station creating jobs and boosting the economy.
And, by eventually linking SunRail to the airport and to All Aboard Florida, we will help build a connection between Downtown Orlando and the entire state… as well as the world. Those transit linkages will be critical to attracting the job creators and careers of the future and to further diversify our economy.
SunRail is the product of an unprecedented level of collaboration. I’d like to thank Central Florida’s local governments, its business community and many civic organizations and residents for making SunRail a reality. I would also like to thank my fellow Commuter Rail Commission members as well as the SunRail team for delivering the project’s first phase on time and on budget.
SunRail’s service is just around the corner.
Buddy Dyer
