District 2 City Commissioner Tony Ortiz and AARP Host Event to Fight Fraud and ID Theft
District 2 City Commissioner Tony Ortiz in partnership with AARP invite the community to an event to fight fraud and ID theft.  At the event a panel of experts will share tips to help residents to protect themselves, their family and the community from fraud, identity theft and scams.
A shredder will also be available at the event and participants are encouraged to bring up to two boxes or two grocery bags full of documents to have them safely destroyed.
The state of Florida ranked number one in the nation for identity theft and fraud reports to the Federal Trade Commission in 2013.  Identity theft, investment fraud and scams rob millions of Americans of their hard-earned money every year. Research shows that more than $20 billion was stolen from about 13 million victims in 2012, according to the latest Javelin Strategy & Research reports on identity fraud.  Older adults tend to be the most victimized, defrauded out of $3 billion every year.
